TAPPING INTO THE OIL AND GAS WELLS OF UGANDA
I know many readers are now pondering on what I mean by tapping into the oil and gas wells of Uganda, it is a simple question though with a straight and direct answer. You can get all the answers you need by reading through this article and I will give you a detailed meaning of what this statement means. We have just attended a book launch conference about the same topic and written by Davis Ampumuza a fourth year student of petroleum geoscience and production at Makerere university.
As Uganda is awaiting commercial oil production which is staged to commence in 2020, most Ugandans are stranded on the different forms of skills they need in order to participate in the sector. Due to an argument by a lecturer of the department of Geology and petroleum studies at Makerere university, Mr. Robert Tugume, you do not need to get an oil and gas engineering or any equivalent qualification to be relevant in the oil and gas sector. He emphasized this and made everybody understand their relevance in the sector you will get all the details as you read through.
The oil and gas sector is very lucrative and it is likely to create over 160000 jobs which are direct, indirect and induced in nature. These jobs will be shared in the different levels of operation of the industry. The oil and gas industry is divided into three levels, the upstream, midstream and down stream. We need to know that technical skills and knowledge requirement decreases as we follow the trend from upstream to downstream. All these levels will employ uniquely and the level of activity will affect intakes of university graduates and technical school graduates.
The upstream level is currently the most vibrant and it will employ individuals who are ready to provide services to the development of the sector. There are many opportunities which includes the construction of the East African crude oil pipeline, Kabale international airport and the refinery. All these jobs are available for civil engineers, mechanical engineers and craftsmen. There will also be high demand for petroleum engineers and geoscientists after the development phase to work at the rig and monitor both drilling and production of oil. The sector also needs other service providers to support them for example they need transportation companies to carry heavy tools to the rig. They will need food suppliers and if you are rearing a good number of domestic animals like goats and pigs, prepare to supply them to the sector because the demand for such valuable products will grow.
The midstream level will involve transportation and distribution of crude oil. This sector will need many people to look after the crude oil pipeline by monitoring and making sure it is safe. This will be longest electrically heated pipeline in Africa and what it means is that we will need many pumping stations and it is estimated that it will have ten pumping stations. The pipeline will also need regular repairing and all these jobs will be done by the citizens of East Africa. Therefore, you can enroll in any international university and get skills related with rude oil pipeline maintenance.
The downstream level involves processing crude oil into petrochemical products like petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas and other industrial products like plastics. This is a call to all local companies to put up petrochemical plants like refineries to keep most of the money in Uganda. The economists can also get involved at this level by ensuring that the oil and gas money is invested in the right sectors like Agriculture and tourism to strengthen the economy.
