THE STORY OF A UGANDAN PETROLEUM ENGINEER
I am Simon Apil, a student of petroleum engineering at Makerere university Kampala. My story began from a small village called Adekokwok in Lira district Northern Uganda. I come from an extended family with two lovely guardians George and Esther Akara. I went to Lira parents school for my lower primary, Gombe s.s for my secondary school education and then to Makerere university.
The life of a petroleum engineer is just as normal as for any other engineer in another field like civil, mechanical and software. I wake up at 5 am every morning on week days, shower and take break fast before embarking on any other program. I also visit my neighbors waking them up as they tell me to do so occasionally. I have three close neighbors that is Sabas, Walter and Edwin and they are as well my friends. I will then pick up my books and embark on an unexpected journey to the campus for lectures. My lectures usually start at 8 am and some are in the afternoon at 2 pm.
The other tricky bit of it is how I spend my weekends, I always go out to the beach with my friends on Saturdays and swim, take coffee and muchomo (roasted meat in Uganda). I sometimes just stay back and study my bible as well do fellowship preparing for Sunday. There are Saturdays when I decide to only read my books and this is mainly a season when tests and exams are approaching. There are times when I call my girlfriend Susan to my room and we watch a movie or take a walk around the university having a glance at the beautiful sceneries and most of the times settle at the university swimming pool for prime time. The prime night out involves worship, praise and comedy from the best artists in Uganda.
The other interesting and most blessed day is Sunday. My Sundays begin at 8 am and I always leave for church by taxi at 10 am. I am a born again christian who prays from phaneroo ministries international Kampala. I always finish Sunday service at 10 am and return to hostel at 12 noon. The rest of day is spent in my room playing worship gospel songs and praises. I sometimes instead look into my bible and study a bible verse. Sundays are one of the best days in my life.
